How I Know A Ulcerative Colitis Diet Works, What About You?

April 28th, 2010

Well I know you are looking to find the scientific way that a diet for ulcerative colitis works but really I can only give you my honest opinion of how I feel about a diet plan for ulcerative colitis from my true life story. To Read more About The Diet Click Here!

It all begins when my husband got sick(imagine that!) in the beginning we thought he would just get over it. Went to a family practice doctor and all we could come up with was giardia to explain the sudden need to run to the restroom, at the time we owned a boat and was spring time and began our summer fun early. After 6 months of constant pain, and losing weight each and every day. We decided for the undreaded…Colonoscopy. That day was the beginning of what we now know life is(not to mention was my husbands birthday that day!) You have an auto immune disease called Ulcerative Colits that effects your colon. “We assume it is hereditary, and don’t know how to cure completely without medicine or surgery” is what the doctor said to us that day. He sent us on our way not really knowing what to think and a pamphlet will illustrated pictures describing how to deal with Ulcerative Colitis. Just like that a swift kick in the behind and your on your way, oh yea we will see you next week for a follow-up. Now we knew what he had but what are we to do?

The different types of treatment for ulcerative colitis is unbelievable. We did what the Doctors told us to do take this pill take that pill, yea your hair might fall out, yea you might not be able to stand up straight because of the side effects but really will help you start losing the pain you feel inside. Where is the joy in this? I remember going places and could see it in my husbands eyes…where is a bathroom in case I need it?…Even I got used to looking for the bathrooms to help him out.

We found ourselves go from out every weekend to staying home because anything that was eating passed through faster then he could eat. He was loosing weight faster then I could GAIN IT! After many hospital admissions for dehydration and malnutrition we knew there had to be some other way the all the different types of medication that were taken. But the doctors said really there is no diet for ulcerative colitis. Well that is what they think it is different for each person that is suffering from ulcerative colitis.

That is when we started searching for alternative ways to be healed. Cause if the most expensive most dangerous drug could not phase him there had to be another way. That is when we found a book that changed everything to help him start feeling better(Click Here!). Within days of the ulcerative colitis diet he was feeling better, able to get out of bed without feeling too week. It was just a matter of finding what worked for him. Soon he was able to gain a few pounds get off his medication and finally FEEL GREAT!

Yea we had to change our eating habits BUT! For how we learned what foods to avoid with ulcerative colitis we began to feel like we could have a “normal” life without the worries of where the bathroom is, wonder what the medication would do to you, and to finally get out of bed feeling BETTER.

That is my reasoning for writing this post today I want you to know there are many out there suffering with ulcerative colitis. I want to get the word out that doctors don’t like to hear. Getting off medication and a diet does work, and finally getting into remission.

Is There Really A Diet For Ulcerative Colits?

April 26th, 2010

There are many People that agree that watching your diet and nutrition can prevent an ulcerative colitis flare-up.  There are others that believe that no matter what you eat can cause the flare-up.  There is not a single diet for every person with colitis  Your diet and  nutrition with ulcerative colitis should be tailored just for you.

When you speak with any ulcerative colitis specialist a very common question that is asked is  Which food should I avoid?  Yet for each person that is affected by colitis is different there are no blanket rules that say eat this eat that and do not stray.  Each food is different to each individual person suffering from ulcerative colitis.

The best way to determine what is best for yourself for an alternative treatment to medication is to start keeping a food diary.  Just like if you were on an actual diet to lose weight.  But a food diary can not only help you pinpoint which foods cause more trouble to you, but really so you can see if you are getting the right amount of nutrients. One other item to add to the diet is you fluid intake, with all the fluids that are leaving your body you must make sure you stay hydrated.

I have had the opportunity(can’t really say it was a great opportunity) to be able to see first hand what a diet can do for anyone suffering from ulcerative colitis.  My husband has ulcerative colitis that has taken him to the deepest and darkest point in his life.  Once we realized that finding the right foods to help minimize the flare-ups and make ulcerative colitis more of a livable disease.

What is Ulcerative Colitis?

April 25th, 2010

The Wikipedia definition of Ulcerative Colits is: a form of inflammatory bowel disease(IBD). Ulcerative colitis is a form of colitis, a disease of the intestine, specifically the larger intestine or colon, that includes characteristic ulcers, or open sores, in the colon.  The Most common symptom of ulcerative colitis is constant diarrhea.  Ulcerative colitis has similarities to Crohn’s Disease.

Contrary to what you may find or read on the Internet, Ulcerative Colitis is a disease that CAN be controlled. For some it may be as simple as a change in diet, while for others it may require surgery. Nevertheless, expanding your understanding of this disease is the first step to remission.

Diets for ulcerative colitis some don’t agree with because they feel like no matter what they eat it will still “go right through them.”  But I believe that a simple diet change will begin to help.  You didn’t get ulcerative colitis from the foods you ate.  Let me put this another way.  Ulcerative colitis was not caused by your diet. There’s been no evidence, scientific or otherwise, to prove that your diet can cause ulcerative colitis so toss that bit of junk right out of the window.  That being said, changing the way you eat, and tracking what causes flare-ups for you can make life a heck of a lot easier.
